Cornea Transplant

Cornea Transplant

A cornea transplant, also known as corneal transplantation, is a surgical procedure that replaces damaged or diseased corneal tissue with healthy donor tissue to restore vision and improve eye comfort. The cornea is the clear, dome-shaped front surface of the eye and plays a crucial role in focusing light.

At Eagle Eye Centre, cornea transplant procedures are performed by experienced ophthalmologists following established Singapore healthcare standards, with careful pre-operative assessment and long-term follow-up care.

What is cornea transplant?

A cornea transplant involves removing part or all of the damaged cornea and replacing it with healthy donor tissue. The transplanted tissue helps restore corneal clarity, improve vision, and reduce pain or discomfort caused by corneal disease.

Types of cornea transplant procedures

Types of cornea transplant procedures

There are several types of cornea transplant procedures. Penetrating keratoplasty replaces the full thickness of the cornea. Lamellar keratoplasty replaces only the affected layers of the cornea and includes techniques such as anterior lamellar keratoplasty and endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK or DSAEK). Your ophthalmologist will recommend the most suitable approach based on your condition.

Am I a candidate for cornea transplant?

You may be considered for cornea transplant if corneal disease or damage significantly affects your vision or eye comfort and cannot be managed with glasses, contact lenses, or other treatments. A comprehensive eye assessment is required to determine suitability.

Recovery & aftercare

Recovery after cornea transplant varies depending on the type of procedure performed. Vision may improve gradually over weeks to months. Patients are required to use prescribed eye drops and attend regular follow-up appointments to monitor graft healing and reduce the risk of rejection.
