Background & Expertise

Director of Oculofacial Plastic and Aesthetics Surgery, Orbit and Lacrimal Services

Dr Petrina Tan is a Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist at Eagle Eye Centre who graduated on the Dean’s List (Pathology) from the National University of Singapore in 2005. She attained Fellowships from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCSEd) in 2013 and the Academy of Medicine, Singapore. She received the gold medal for being the top candidate in Glaucoma in her final specialist exams.

She is a recipient of the Health Manpower Development Plan award in 2015 and further advanced her subspecialty training in Oculoplastics, Lacrimal and Orbital surgery in Queen Victoria Hospital, United Kingdom. The hospital is renowned for pioneering plastic reconstructive techniques in the treatment of aircrew members who suffered serious burns during the Battle of Britain in World War II.

Dr Tan specializes in Oculofacial Plastic Surgery (droopy upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid eyebags, eyelid malposition), Lacrimal Surgery (management of tearing, nasolacrimal tear duct obstruction, infections) and Orbital Surgery (thyroid eye disease, orbital fractures, orbital tumors).

Dr Tan brings back with her novel surgical techniques, including scar-less ptosis (droopy eyelid) repair and scar-less tear duct surgery. Asian patients have a greater tendency for post-operative inflammation and scarring. Scar-less surgeries, such as the posterior approach ptosis surgery and endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy, are therefore particularly useful for Asians. She is committed to achieving good functional results and aesthetic outcomes for her patients.

She has expertise in managing a range of eye conditions including cataract extraction surgeries with multifocal and premium toric lens implantations, glaucoma screening and treatment, diabetic eye screening, dry eyes and myopia control. Her ethos is to provide affordable and holistic eye care for the family and connects with both the elderly and children; with 3 children of her own.

Keeping up to date with the latest developments in ophthalmology is also a priority for Dr Tan. She is active in research publications and has published widely in the field of rehabilitation of patients with facial nerve palsy, posterior approach ptosis surgery and dermal fillers.
