Director of Vitreoretinal Surgery and Retinal Services
Dr Paul Zhao is a fellowship-trained vitreoretinal surgeon and retina specialist in Singapore. He is the Director of Vitreoretinal Surgery and Retinal Services at Eagle Eye Centre, with subspecialty expertise in the medical and surgical management of retinal diseases including retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, diabetic eye disease, vitreous haemorrhage, and vitreomacular traction.
Dr Zhao graduated from the National University of Singapore in 2002 and completed specialty training in Ophthalmology in Singapore. He obtained M.Med (Ophth), FRCS (Ed), and FAMS, and subsequently completed a vitreoretinal fellowship at Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong, in 2012.
His surgical practice includes retinal detachment repair, vitrectomy for macular hole and epiretinal membrane, and the management of diabetic vitreoretinal disease including tractional retinal detachment and vitreous haemorrhage. He also has specialist expertise in the management of subluxed and dislocated lenses, including sutureless scleral-fixation techniques performed in conjunction with vitreoretinal surgery.
In addition to surgical retina care, Dr Zhao manages a broad spectrum of medical retinal conditions, including age-related macular degeneration, retinal vascular disorders, diabetic retinopathy, and intraocular infections. He also performs complex cataract surgery where appropriate, including femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery and the use of intraocular lenses for correction of astigmatism and presbyopia.
Dr Zhao has held senior appointments in both public and private practice in Singapore. He is a Visiting Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist at National University Hospital, Alexandra Hospital, and Ng Teng Fong Hospital. He previously served as Head of the Ophthalmology Department at Alexandra Hospital, was a Senior Consultant in the Retina Service at National University Hospital, and led the development of the retina service at Ng Teng Fong Hospital prior to entering private practice. He has also held an appointment as Assistant Professor at the National University of Singapore.
Dr Zhao has authored over 20 peer-reviewed publications in vitreoretinal disease and surgery, has presented at local and international ophthalmology conferences, and has been involved in pharmaceutical clinical trials and collaborative research with A*STAR, SERI, and other restructured hospitals in Singapore.
