Director of Retina Services and Vitreo-retinal Surgery

Graduated with an MBBS degree from the National University of Singapore in 1995, Dr Jacob Cheng went on to specialise in the field of Ophthalmology and obtained the MMED (Ophth) in 2003 and postgraduate qualifications from Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCSEd).

Dr Cheng is a Consultant Surgeon in Cataract and Comprehensive Ophthalmology and subspecialises in the field of Vitreoretinal Diseases. His main expertise is in the fields of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular diseases, inherited retinal disorders and diagnostic visual electrophysiology. He has also performed numerous small incision cataract (phaco-refractive) surgeries with wavefront, toric and multifocal intraocular lenses, and femto-laser bladeless LASIK & Epi-LASIK procedures.

Dr Cheng also has special interest in electrophysiology, having trained at Moorfields Eye Hospital. He has been invited to give lectures and teaching workshops at many meetings around the region on areas of medical retina and retinal imaging. Dr Cheng is also an adjunct research scientist with the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI), clinical teacher with the National University of Singapore (NUS) and part-time consultant at the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC).

He is involved in research projects in drugs and in collaboration with many international instituitions for research. He has also published in many peer-reviewed scientific papers. Recently, Dr Cheng was appointed into the Vitreo-retina subspecialty committe, College of Ophthalmologists and selected for the Ophthalmology Mount Alvernia operation committee. He is also a member of the Mount Alvernia Medical Advisory Board.

Dr Cheng is also a devout Christian as well as a loving husband and proud father to 2 boys. He is not afraid of extreme sports including deep-sea wreck diving and taking on sky-diving while serving as a brigade medical officer in the SAF. His other passion is sports and enjoys a game of golf anytime.

In Singapore, he has organised numerous local programmes for the community including Project I-Care (an eye screening programme for old folk’s homes) and participated in many humanitarian missions to India, China and Indonesia.
