What is Eagle Myopia Control Program (EMCP)
- Nightly use of 1% Atropine eye drops
- Child will be prescribed with photochromatic (transitional) progressive eye glasses
- Intermediate concentrations of Atropine eye drops such as 0.025%, 0.05%, 0.125% or 0.5% are also available
What is Eagle Myopia Control Program LITE (EMCP LITE)
- Nightly use of 0.01% Atropine eye drops.
- The eye drops cause minimal dilation of the pupil with almost no effect on near vision
- Child will be prescribed with standard eye glasses
If myopia still progresses, a switch to higher concentration of atropine drops such as 0.025%, 0.05%, 0.125%, 0.5%, or even 1% can be considered.
Under EMCP LITE/EMCP programmes, your child will apply a single dose of 0.01%/1% atropine eye drops respectively every night. Your child will have an eye check-up every 3 – 6 months under the supervision of our Ophthalmologists and Clinical Optometrists. This is to ensure the safe and optimal use of Atropine eye drops to slow down the progression of your child’s myopia.
Effects of Atropine drops
Although 0.01% Atropine has minimal side effects and is well-tolerated, higher concentrations may cause the following side effects:
- Photophobia (light sensitivity) and glare
- Inability to focus on near objects
- Allergic reactions
For children on higher concentrations, they will be prescribed with photo-chromatic (transitional) progressive addition lenses to overcome the effects of photophobia and inability to focus on near objects.
Who is eligible for this program?
- Children aged 6 to 12 years
- Spherical refractive error between -1.00 to -6.00
- Normal ocular health other than myopia
- Good general health with no heart or respiratory diseases
- No lazy eyes
