Dr Jacob Cheng

Dr Jacob Cheng Yen Chuan is the Director of retina services at the Eagle Eye Center (EEC) at Mount Alvernia Hospital, Singapore. He is a Consultant Surgeon in Cataract and Comprehensive Ophthalmology and he subspecialises in the field of Vitreoretinal Medicine.

Dr Cheng obtained his medical degree from the National University of Singapore in 1995. He was very active in his varsity days and was once the president of the Medical Society/ Club as well as a council member of National University of Singapore Student Union (NUSSU).

He went on to specialize in the field of ophthalmology after obtaining the MMED (Ophth) in 2003. He was also admitted as a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCSEd) and Academy of Medicine (FAMS).

Before joining Eagle Eye Center as senior consultant eye surgeon, Dr Cheng served as a consultant and a subspecialist in medical retina services at the Singapore National Eye Center (SNEC). He also has special interest in electrophysiology, having trained with Professor Graham Holder at the world- Moorfields Eye Hospital.

His main expertise is in the field of age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular diseases, inherited retinal disorders, as well as diagnostic visual electrophysiology. He is often consulted with regards to diagnosis and management of challenging and rare cases such as the observation of slow vision (bradyopsia) and Cephalic Vein Thrombosis from fellow ophthalmologists.

Dr Cheng is active as a clinician, researcher and teacher, having numerous presentations in international and regional conferences. His current research is in the field of age-related macular degeneration of the retina. He has many publications in peer-reviewed journals including Archives Ophthalmology, American Journal of Ophthalmology and Retina and is also the award winner for the TEI-Pfzier Research prize for case report/ case series 2006. He is currently an adjunct research scientist with the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI) and a clinical teacher with the National University of Singapore. He also returns to Singapore National Eye Centre on a part-time basis as a Consultant.
